Naturopathic emphasizes no-drug based treatments that include self-care, preventive behaviors, dietary nutrition, and physical activity. It is a primary health care profession, prioritizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health. The doctors use methods that encourage clients in the self-healing process by incorporating counseling, biofeedback, and other mind-body techniques. Naturopathic treatment for mental health helps individuals with long-term relief from their mental health issues. It is an alternative to traditional treatment that allows for lasting success where the client works with the doctor and is given a fully personalized treatment plan.

Naturopaths take a philosophic approach to client care, which can be summarized into six principles: Each principal plays a role in guiding naturopathic doctors in diagnosis and treatment. The principles are as follows:

Do No Harm – The physician chooses the most appropriate and least toxic treatments necessary for every patient.

The Healing Power of Nature – The naturopathic doctors recognize, supports, and enhances the natural healing power of the body’s inherent ability to heal itself. Together, the client and the doctor brainstorm ways to spend more time quality time outside in natural settings. They focus on identifying and removing obstacles to recovery by facilitating and supporting the natural healing capability in clients.

Identify and Treat the Causes – The doctors are trained to find and treat the underlying root causes of the disease. The belief is to identify and address the issue by building the therapeutic alliance with the client. The goal is to help individuals uncover and heal the cause of illness that may possibly lead to a positive and enduring healthy outcome for the client.

Doctor as Teacher – An important role for a naturopathic doctor is to educate and support clients on their personal health management. The aim is to make sure the client is very well informed, understands, and is ready to participate in their health care plan. They empower clients to take responsibility for their own health. The educated client will be able to step up for themselves and feel ready to take an active role in the healing process. The client gets a fresh perspective on preventative care and natural treatment options for improved health. The doctor acknowledges the therapeutic value inherent in the doctor-patient relationship.

Treat the Whole Person - This is a holistic concept that recognizes the body as an integrated whole. Naturopathic doctors work to treat their clients, not their disease. A naturopathic assessment addresses the nutritional status, lifestyle, family history, physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, and social factors in a person’s life. The doctor educates and suggests ways to implement the healing plan in their routine.

Prevention -Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Naturopathic doctors promote a focus on overall health, wellness, and disease prevention by spending time with clients to create a healthy plan keeping the body, mind, and spirit as a central focus.
