What’s the first therapy session like?

Have you wondered what the first therapy session is like and how prepared you need to be as a client?

There is no preparation required on the client’s part when going to their first therapy session. The client simply must be themselves. Feeling anxious about the first session is natural because you have taken the brave step towards your mental wellness. Generally, the first session is all about the therapist asking questions to know the client, learn what their presenting concerns are, their struggles and what their ultimate goal is out of therapy. The first session can be crucial for both the client and therapist to recognize whether a therapeutic connection has been made or not. This connection further helps in establishing trust between the client and the clinician.

Once the therapist has gained an understanding of the client’s struggles and concerns and other relevant information, the therapist will want to learn about the client’s coping methods when in distress. First sessions with different clients can be different. Some clients are ready to delve right into their past and present struggles, whilst some start slow. Regardless, the therapist takes a non-judgemental approach to whatever clients choose.

Amidst all this, a client’s goal in seeking therapy is of utmost importance. As a client, you could be struggling in several different areas of life such as relationship, work etc., as well as be dealing with mental health concerns. In this scenario, the therapist will want to know what you would like to get more help with and help you recognize how changes can be made to feel better overall.

The first session for many clients can also be emotionally draining. Clients can nearly feel the floodgates open which can sometimes be a daunting experience. A lot of “untouched” and “unaddressed” thoughts and feelings that have piled up over time can surface in the first meeting during the Q&A with the therapist. However, it is the therapist’s ethical and professional responsibility to maintain confidentiality about what has been shared during the session. It is also the therapist’s responsibility to create a safe and trustworthy environment, so the client feels comfortable sharing their vulnerabilities and crucial moments of their lives.

At Vaughan Counselling and Psychotherapy, we take this step seriously and our therapists emphasize on building a therapeutic rapport with the client in the initial session. Our admin staff first ensures to get some background information on clients current struggles. This is done so that they can match you, the client, with the right therapist at our clinic. If you feel unsure about the therapist, you are welcome to have a free 15 minute consultation with them before you book your first session.
